The kitchen works harder than any other room in the house. Small changes here pay you back every single day, from your morning coffee to Sunday dinner with the family.
Bring storage within reach
The easiest storage sits between your hip and shoulder. Move everyday dishes, glasses and spices into that zone and save high cabinets for holiday platters.
- Pull-out shelves: Retrofit kits for lower cabinets cost $60 to $150 each and end kneeling and reaching.
- Deep drawers: Full-extension drawers for pots and pans are easier than doors with fixed shelves.
- A lazy Susan in corner cabinets brings the back to the front with one spin.
Light the work zones
Ceiling lights cast your own shadow onto the counter. Under-cabinet LED strips light the exact spot where you chop and read recipes. Over an island, hang pendants about 30 to 36 inches above the counter so they light the surface without glare.
Switch to easy hardware
Swap small round knobs for D-shaped pulls at least 4 inches long. They open with a curled hand or a finger hook. A single-lever faucet, ideally touch-activated, is gentler on hands than two twist handles.
Add a seat at the counter
A stool with a back and footrest lets you sit while you prep vegetables or chat with a grandchild doing homework. For a standard 36-inch counter, choose a stool with a 24 to 26 inch seat height.
Warm it up
A kitchen should feel as welcoming as the living room. Add a washable runner with a non-slip back, open shelves with a few favorite bowls, a bowl of lemons and a small herb pot by the window. Warm white bulbs at 2700K to 3000K soften stone and stainless steel.
