Outdoor space is where long summer evenings and crisp autumn afternoons happen. With a little planning, it can be as comfortable as any room inside.
Seating that is easy to use
Deep, low lounge chairs look relaxing but are hard to leave. Look for chairs with a firm seat, a 17 to 19 inch seat height and solid arms. Teak, powder-coated aluminum and all-weather wicker hold up well across most American climates.
Plan for shade
A market umbrella with a tilt crank, a pergola with a fabric canopy or a retractable awning keeps the space usable at midday. Shade also protects cushions from fading.
Light the evening
String lights overhead create a warm glow, while solar path lights and step lights make walking safe after dark. Choose outdoor-rated fixtures and plug into a GFCI outlet.
Low-care plants
Large containers hold moisture longer than small ones and are easier to tend without bending. Try ornamental grasses, lavender, hostas in shade or herbs like rosemary and thyme near the door. A drip irrigation kit on a timer saves daily watering.
Safe surfaces
Choose textured pavers or composite decking over smooth, glossy tile. Keep paths at least 36 inches wide, add a handrail beside any steps and sweep fallen leaves often in autumn, when wet leaves become slippery.
